The pentagram has one point for each element: fire, earth, water, air, and spirit. The circle on the outside, making it a pentacle, connects them all. Pentagrams can face any way, and are not a symbol of evil, but rather a symbol of connection. 
 
I found this shell on Cayucos Beach in California. Shells represent a resilient and determined mindset, since to their inhabitors they protect their minds. They are believed to ward off evil spirits, and connect the natural and supernatural world.
